I usually drop into Database Debunkings on a regular basis. Fabian Pascal and C J Date are in there with the theory behind relational databases. Some of the comments are harsh, maybe even unkind - but when you have to make a system work (let along perform well) that has not been written to conform to even 1st Normal Form then they make perfect sense.
The maxim of 'Get it working then get it fast' seems to have bypassed a whole generation of database deigners
The Quest Pipelines have some interesting items and an archive. Well worth a visit for those DB scripts and hints
